Kristiansand in a Nutshell

A little history, what the city is known for — and what to expect on a Saturday or Sunday.

History
Founded in 1641
King Christian IV laid out the city as a grid of square blocks — the “Kvadraturen” you walk through today.
Old town
Posebyen
The wooden-house quarter survived the great fire of 1892 and is one of Northern Europe’s largest areas of low, old wooden houses.
Known for
The summer city
Beaches, the archipelago and Dyreparken — Norway’s largest zoo and amusement park.
Faith
Norway’s “Bible Belt”
Southern Norway has a strong Christian tradition, and you will see many churches and chapels. Several of the city’s large congregations started in a small house in Posebyen.
Saturday
Shops open, city alive
The centre is lively on Saturdays. Look out for markets and events around Torvet — the tourist information in Rådhusgata 18 knows what’s on.
Sunday
Most shops closed
By Norwegian law most shops are closed on Sundays. Churches, cafés, sights and nature are open — perfect for a church service, a walk in Posebyen or coffee by the sea.
